MECS Definitions of Electricity Terms
Net Electricity : The term of measurement for First Use and for Fuel Consumption of Electricity. "Net Electricity" is defined as :
the sum of quantities of electricity that are :
minus quantities of electricity that are :
Not
included are electricity inputs from onsite cogeneration, nor generation from
combustible fuels,
because that energy has already been included
as generating fuel (coal, for example).
Offsite-Produced Electricity : The equivalent term to Purchased Electricity, as defined in the Annual Survey of Manufactures. "Offsite-Produced Electricity" is defined as :
the sum of quantities of electricity that are :
Not
included is any type of onsite electricity generation, such as cogeneration
and generation from
noncombustible renewable resources.
Net Demand for Electricity : The total amount of electricity used by manufacturing establishments. "Net Demand for Electricity" is defined as :
the sum of quantities of electricity that are :
minus quantities of electricity that are :
"Net
Demand for Electricity" is not the same as "Net Electricity"
because "Net Electricity"
specifically excludes electricity generated
onsite from combustible energy sources.
Cogeneration : The production of electrical energy and another form of useful energy, such as heat or steam, through the sequential use of energy. "Cogeneration" includes electricity generated from fossil fuels, such as natural gas, fuel oils, and coal; wood; and other biomass.
Renewable Resources : Sources that are essentially inexhaustible. Combustible "Renewable Resources" include wood harvested directly from trees, tree bark, and wood waste. Noncombustible "Renewable Resources" include solar power, wind power, hydropower, and geothermal power.
Transfers In(Out) : The quantities of electricity purchased(sold) by a central purchasing agent or other establishment of the same company.
Onsite Electricity Generation : The process of producing electrical energy by the transformation of other forms of energy, within the boundaries of the manufacturing establishment. "Onsite Generation" includes cogeneration, generation from renewable resources, and conventional generation from combustible energy sources, such as fuel oils and diesel fuels.
