MECS Definitions of Energy Terms

First Use of Energy for All Purposes:   Unduplicated demand for energy by manufacturers.  "First Use" is defined as :

  1. all energy produced offsite; and
  2. all energy produced onsite :
    1. either directly from captive mines and wells
    2. or as byproducts from nonenergy materials (such as sawdust from furniture production, hydrogen from electrolysis of brine, nut shells from peanut processing).

Not included are byproducts from feedstock use of energy (see below).

Energy for Nonfuel Purposes (Feedstocks):  Energy used for purposes other than for heat, power, and electricity generation (called nonfuel purposes), such as :

  1. natural gas processed to extract gases (like butane, ethane, and propane) which, in turn, may be used as raw materials to produce fertilizers and pharmaceutical products; and
  2. coal used by a steel maker as a raw material to produce coal coke.

Fuel Consumption:   All energy used for heat, power, and electricity generation, regardless of where the energy was produced.

Not included is energy for nonfuel purposes (see above).

Offsite-Produced Fuel Consumption:  All energy used for heat, power, and electricity generation that is :

  1. purchased by the establishment; or
  2. transferred from offsite into the establishment.

Not included are feedstocks (see above) and onsite-produced energy.

Byproducts:  A secondary or additional product resulting from the feedstock use of energy or the processing of nonenergy materials. For example, the more common byproducts of coke ovens are coal gas, tar, and a mixture of benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX).
