A number of general technologies can contribute to
increased efficiency and productivity in manufacturing. These include computer control of
building environment, computer control of processes or major energy-using equipment, waste
heat recovery, and adjustable-speed motors. About 85% of U.S. aluminum industry
establishments reported using one or more of these technologies in 1994. Most frequently
cited in the aluminum industry are the use of computer control of processes or major
energy-using equipment (about 66%) and the use of adjustable-speed motors (65%). [MECS 1994]
