The Quarterly Coal Report provides detailed quarterly data on U.S. coal production, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, quality, and stocks. The report also provides data on U.S. coke production, consumption, stocks, imports, and exports. All data for 2024 and previous years are final. All data for 2025 are preliminary.
Highlights for the second quarter of 2025
- U.S. coal production during the second quarter of 2025 totaled 128.1 million short tons (MMst), which was 3.2% lower than the previous quarter and 8.3% higher than the second quarter of 2024. Production in the Western region, which represented about 53.2% of total U.S. coal production in the second quarter of 2025, totaled about 68.2 MMst (17.6% higher than the second quarter of 2024).
- U.S. coal exports for the second quarter of 2025 (22.4 MMst) decreased 8.3% from the first quarter of 2025. The average price of U.S. coal exports during the second quarter of 2025 was $107.52 per short ton.
- The United States continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (73.5%) and Canada (18.5%). No imports from Australia or Indonesia were recorded for the second quarter of 2025. U.S. coal imports in the second quarter of 2025 totaled 0.7 MMst. The average price of U.S. coal imports during the second quarter of 2025 was $129.16 per short ton.
- Steam coal exports totaled 10.8 MMst (7.7% lower than the first quarter of 2025). Metallurgical coal exports totaled 11.6 MMst (8.9% lower than the first quarter of 2025).
- U.S. coal consumption totaled 98.8 MMst in the second quarter of 2025, which was 16.6% lower than the 118.5 MMst reported in the first quarter of 2025 and 8.6% higher than the 91 MMst reported in the second quarter of 2024. The electric power sector accounted for about 91.4% of the total U.S. coal consumption in the second quarter of 2025.
- In the second quarter of 2025, coal stocks grew to 138.5 MMst from 133.2 MMst at the end of the first quarter of 2025 (a 4% increase). Stocks in the electric power sector increased to 116.4 MMst from 111.7 MMst at the end of the first quarter of 2025.
