Natural Gas Monthly

May 31, 2024
In March 2024, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the first time since April 2021. Preliminary dry natural gas production in March 2024 was 3,180 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 102.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 0.3% (0.3 Bcf/d) lower in March 2024 than in March 2023 (102.9 Bcf/d); despite this decrease, dry natural gas production was the second highest for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry production. Gross withdrawals increased from March 2023.

Canada 2024 Country Analysis Brief

May 30, 2024
Canada is a major energy producer, consumer, and exporter with a diverse and dynamic energy sector. Historically, hydroelectric power dominated Canada’s energy mix, but oil and natural gas production have grown. The majority of Canada's oil and natural gas output is in Alberta; in contrast, hydroelectric and renewable energy make up a larger share of energy output in Quebec and British Columbia.

Our U.S. summer natural gas consumption forecast for electric power matches 2023 record ›

We forecast that the natural gas consumed for electricity generation this summer in the United States will reach near the record set last year. Despite a 3% increase in overall U.S. electricity generation this summer, we do not expect natural gas consumption for electricity generation to grow. Growth in electricity generation will be largely driven by increased renewable energy production. In our May 2024 Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), we forecast natural gas consumed to generate electricity will average 44.7 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in the United States during the peak summer months of June through August, matching the record high set in the summer of 2023.
