Energy Kids Wins Web Award!

Congratulations to Energy Ant! Energy Kids was honored with a 2012 Outstanding Website Award by the Web Marketing Association. Energy Kids scored especially well in the Design, Content, and Copywriting catagories.

This is not the first website award for Energy Kids. It was recognized with several Gold Screen Awards and the Adobe Merit Award in 2010.

Energy Kids and Energy Explained Win 2010 Adobe Merit Award!

Energy Ant is jumping for joy because Energy Kids and its sister site, Energy Explained, are winners of the 2010 Adobe Merit Award. The two energy education sites, both from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, were honored as "the best of the best in open and engaging government" at Adobe's Government Assembly held in Washington, DC, on November 3rd.

Both Energy Kids and Energy Explained promote energy education, but were designed for different audiences. Energy Kids contains fun educational content for kids, parents, and teachers, while Energy Explained is a plain-language energy encyclopedia for the general public, high school and college students and teachers, policy-makers, small businesses, and reporters.

Although Energy Kids and Energy Explained look very different, they actually share a lot of their content. You might think of the two sites as two teachers, with different personalities, teaching the same lessons at different levels.

In May 2010 Energy Kids and Energy Explained were honored with Gold Screen Awards from the National Association of Government Communicators.

When the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC) announced the 2010 winners of its Blue Pencil & Gold Screen Awards Competition at a banquet held May 17, 2010 in Washington, D.C, Energy Kids won big! NAGC received more than 440 entries for the annual competition, which recognizes superior communications efforts of government agencies and the people who create them. Energy Kids was awarded 1st place in two catagories and won the top honor overall!

  • Best Website — 1st place
  • Shoestring Budget — 1st place
  • Best of Show — overall winner!

The NAGC board of directors chose EIA’s Energy Kids website (http://www.eia.gov/kids/) as the first recipient of its "Best in Show" award. "We were impressed by the fact that it took first place in both the Shoestring Budget and the Web Site I categories,” said Maria VanderKolk, NAGC competitions chair and member of the NAGC Board. "It also speaks to the changing nature of communications."

Sister Site "Energy Explained" Also Honored

EIA's Energy Explained adult energy education website (http://www.eia.gov/energyexplained) also won second place in the "Best Electronic Publication" category. The site shares much of its content with Energy Kids but has a different layout and provides a greater level of detail. Energy Explained is more suited for high-school students and above.
