Distributed Generation, Battery Storage, and Combined Heat and Power System Characteristics and Costs in the Buildings and Industrial Sectors

Mar 28, 2024
Distributed generation refers to onsite, behind-the-meter energy generation. Distributed generation often includes electricity from renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaics and small wind turbines, as well as battery energy storage systems that enable delayed electricity use. Distributed generation can also include electricity and heat from combined heat and power (CHP) systems in the buildings and industrial sectors. We work with technology experts to estimate distributed generation, CHP, and battery energy storage equipment cost and performance characteristics. These reports help us increase transparency for some of the most important assumptions we use for residential, commercial, and industrial energy consumption and electricity generation projections in our Annual Energy Outlook.

Monthly Energy Review

Mar 26, 2024
The Monthly Energy Review is our comprehensive report on recent and historical energy statistics. According to our March 2024 report, preliminary estimates indicate that U.S. total primary energy production equaled 103 quadrillion British thermal units in 2023, the highest total on record and a 4% increase from 2022.

Electric Power Monthly

Mar 26, 2024
Data in the March 2024 Electric Power Monthly (EPM) are for January 2024, when net generation in the United States increased 9.1% from January 2023. Consumption of natural gas for power generation was up 16.7% compared with January 2023. The average residential retail price of electricity was relatively unchanged (down 0.1%) from January 2023.

South China Sea Regional Analysis Brief

Mar 21, 2024
The South China Sea is a critical world trade route, which had 10 billion barrels of petroleum and petroleum product and 6.7 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade passing through it in 2023. It stretches from Singapore and the Strait of Malacca in the southwest to the Strait of Taiwan in the northeast.

Sudan Country Analysis Brief

Mar 20, 2024
Sudan has had two civil wars since it gained independence in 1956. The second civil war ended in 2005 and eventually led to South Sudan becoming an independent nation-state. The secession of South Sudan significantly affected Sudan’s economy because Sudan lost 75% of its oil reserves to South Sudan. Disruptions in oil production, disputes over oil revenue sharing, and lower oil prices have negatively affected both economies. Instability in both countries has persisted in the post-referendum period because unresolved issues on domestic and interstate relations still linger.

South Sudan Country Analysis Brief

Mar 20, 2024
In April 2023, armed conflict broke out in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital city, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), under the leadership of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan (who is also the current leader of the military-led government), and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), under the leadership of Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (also known as Hemedti). As of January 2024, fighting between the two factions is still ongoing and has spread to other parts of the country, increasing the risk of shut-ins or damage to oil infrastructure that could disrupt crude oil production.

Drilling Productivity Report

Mar 18, 2024
The Drilling Productivity Report has been updated with the latest charts and methodology. This report uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key regions.

Liquids pipeline projects

Mar 15, 2024
This spreadsheet contains detailed information on liquids (crude oil, petroleum products, and hydrocarbon gas liquids) pipeline projects. We do not collect the data on an EIA survey, but rather we compile the data from various sources including trade press, pipeline company websites, and government agencies. These data are not a forecast. They represent last-known public information on projects, as of December 31, 2023. The status of each project is categorized as completed (since 2010), announced, under construction, on hold, or canceled.

State Energy Data System: Distillate fuel oil, biodiesel, and renewable diesel through 2022

Mar 15, 2024
Annual state-level estimates of consumption, prices, and expenditures for distillate fuel oil and consumption for biodiesel and renewable diesel.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Mar 12, 2024
Global oil markets. As a result of OPEC+ extending crude oil production cuts, we have reduced our forecast for global oil production growth in 2024. The lower growth contributes to significant global oil inventory declines in our forecast for the second quarter of 2024 (2Q24). Because of falling inventories, we now expect the Brent crude oil spot price will average $88 per barrel (b) in 2Q24, up $4/b from our February STEO, and we expect the Brent price will average $87/b this year.

State Energy Data System: Residual fuel oil and kerosene through 2022

Mar 8, 2024
Annual state-level estimates of consumption, prices, and expenditures for residual fuel oil and kerosene.

Preliminary dry natural gas production in December 2023 was 3,300 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 106.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 6.2% (6.2 Bcf/d) higher in December 2023 than in December 2022 (100.2 Bcf/d) and the highest for any month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from December 2022

U.S. biodiesel imports have doubled since 2022 due to low prices in Europe ›

Annual U.S. biodiesel imports doubled from 2022 to 2023 to 33,000 barrels per day (b/d) and continued to rise in the first two months of 2024, according to the most recent data available. Much of the increase in biodiesel imports has come from Germany, and the remaining increase has come mostly from elsewhere in Europe, where a biodiesel surplus has lowered prices. More
