Underground Natural Gas Working Storage Capacity

May 7, 2025
This annual report calculates underground natural gas storage capacity as of November 2024 and explains how changes in storage capacity relate to market circumstances. Natural gas storage capacity increased in 2024 compared with 2023 by about 1.7%, according to the demonstrated peak capacity metric used to assess working natural gas storage capacity. Design capacity increased slightly, by 0.1%, since 2023.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

May 6, 2025
Trade policy assumptions. The U.S. macroeconomic outlook we use in the Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) is based on S&P Global’s macroeconomic model. S&P Global’s most recent model reflects the tariffs announced on April 2, but the model was finalized prior to the 90-day temporary suspension of tariffs granted to certain countries. As a result, our macroeconomic forecast assumes significantly lower tariffs on China’s products than are currently in place and significantly higher tariffs on countries subject to the 90-day temporary suspension. These differences in tariff rates likely have offsetting effects on the macroeconomic forecast.

Annual Energy Outlook 2025

Apr 15, 2025
The Annual Energy Outlook 2025 (AEO2025) explores potential long-term energy trends in the United States. AEO2025 is published in accordance with Section 205c of the Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 (Public Law 95-91), which requires the Administrator of the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) to prepare an annual report that contains trends and projections of energy consumption and supply. These projections are used by federal, state, and local governments; industry; trade associations; and other planners and decisionmakers in the public and private sectors.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

Apr 10, 2025
Recent oil price movements. We completed modeling and analysis for this report on April 7. More recent policy changes are not incorporated. Recent developments in trade policy and oil production led to a significant drop in oil prices during the first week of April. On April 2, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order announcing 10% tariffs on imports from all countries, with higher tariffs initially imposed on some countries. On April 4, China responded by imposing 34% tariffs on imports from the United States. Amidst the tariff announcements, OPEC+ members announced on April 3 that some countries will start production increases in May that were originally set for July. Following these announcements, the Brent crude oil spot price fell by 14% from April 2 to $66 per barrel (b) on April 7. We expect that prices for crude oil and other commodities will continue to experience significant volatility as market participants assess the effects of trade policies.

Well completions per location more than double in Lower 48 states as technology advances ›

We estimate that the average number of wells completed simultaneously at the same location in the Lower 48 states has more than doubled, increasing from 1.5 wells in December 2014 to more than 3.0 wells in June 2024. By completing multiple wells at once rather than sequentially, operators can accelerate their production timeline and reduce their cost per well. The increasing number of simultaneous completions reflects significant technological advances in hydraulic fracturing operations, particularly in equipment capabilities and operational strategies.
