Corrections to data in the Weekly Petroleum Status Report (WPSR)

Release Date: July 25, 2019

Beginning with data for the week ending May 17, 2019, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) implemented a new processing system to produce the Weekly Petroleum Status Report (WPSR). After publication, three errors were discovered that affected certain aggregate totals of petroleum products that were published in the WPSR and/or related areas on EIA’s website. These errors did not affect data for crude oil or any individual petroleum products, all of which were published accurately.

The errors affected data published for the week ending May 17, 2019, through data for the week ending June 21, 2019. EIA has made the necessary corrections, and the tables available through the WPSR publication XLS files, Petroleum Navigator and EIA’s API now reflect these corrections. An errata sheet listing the weeks and data elements affected, along with the published and revised values, is included in the link below.

  1. The highest level aggregation of all imports, which includes both crude oil and petroleum products reported as total imports, did not include imports of distillate fuel oil with more than 2,000 parts per million (ppm) sulfur. This omission caused the published total imports and published total net imports value to be too low in those weeks when imports of this high-sulfur distillate fuel oil were reported. Because imports of the high-sulfur distillate fuel oil are not frequently reported, this error only affected data published for the weeks ending May 17, May 24, and June 7, 2019. The data published for both total distillate fuel oil imports and total petroleum product imports displayed throughout WPSR did correctly include these imports of distillate fuel oil with more than 2,000 ppm sulfur.

  2. The Highlights section of the WPSR report includes a summary table that shows total aggregate stocks and stocks of certain key products. In this Highlights summary table, a composite value called all other oils, which in this particular table includes stocks of everything other than crude oil, motor gasoline, and distillate fuel oil, omitted stocks of ethanol. (This product is not the same product as other oils whose stocks were reported correctly and are not subject to this correction.) This error affected data published in WPSR for the reporting weeks ending May 17, 2019, through June 14, 2019. Note that the stocks of ethanol reported both individually and in all other tables and sections of WPSR were correctly shown in all weeks.

  3. For the reporting weeks ending May 17, 2019, through June 21, 2019, the gasoline days of supply calculation incorrectly used just the inventory of motor gasoline blending components instead of total motor gasoline inventories. This caused the published gasoline days of supply to be about 2.0–2.5 days lower than the correct days of supply for gasoline for those affected weeks, all of which have been corrected. The gasoline days of supply were also corrected in a related product to the WPSR, This Week in Petroleum.
