September 2024

Note:  Normally, we revise the prior two years of monthly data in the Natural Gas Monthly after we publish the Natural Gas Annual (NGA). We have not yet applied these annual adjustments to the 2022 and 2023 data in the November 2024 Natural Gas Monthly publication.

• In September 2024, dry natural gas production decreased year over year for the sixth time in the past seven months. Preliminary dry natural gas production in September 2024 was 3,064 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 102.1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 2.2% (2.3 Bcf/d) lower in September 2024 than in September 2023 (104.4 Bcf/d). Gross withdrawals also decreased from September 2023:
• Gross withdrawals: 3,714 Bcf for the month, or 123.8 Bcf/d
  • A 1.2% decrease compared with September 2023 (125.4 Bcf/d)
• Despite this decrease, the daily rate of gross withdrawals was the second highest for the month since 1980, the earliest year in this data set

• Estimated natural gas consumption in September 2024 was 2,425 Bcf, or 80.8 Bcf/d:
• A 2.2% increase compared with September 2023 (79.1 Bcf/d)
  
• The daily rate of natural gas consumption was the highest for the month since we began using the current methodology for consumption in 2001
  
• The year-over-year average daily rate of dry natural gas consumption in September 2024 increased in each of the four consuming sectors. Natural gas deliveries by consuming sector in September 2024 were:
  
  • Residential deliveries: 114 Bcf for the month, or 3.784 Bcf/d
    • A 0.2% increase compared with September 2023 (3.778 Bcf/d)
    
  • Commercial deliveries: 158 Bcf for the month, or 5.3 Bcf/d
    • An 8.2% increase compared with September 2023 (4.9 Bcf/d)
    
  • Highest daily rate of commercial deliveries for the month since 1973, the earliest year in this data set
  
  • Industrial deliveries: 669 Bcf for the month, or 22.3 Bcf/d
    • A 0.6% increase compared with September 2023 (22.2 Bcf/d)
    
  • Highest daily rate of industrial deliveries for the month since 2001, the earliest year in this data set
  
  • Electric power deliveries: 1,228 Bcf for the month, or 40.9 Bcf/d
  • A 3.1% increase compared with September 2023 (39.7 Bcf/d)
  • Highest daily rate of electric power deliveries for the month since we began using the current methodology for them in 2001

• Net natural gas imports (imports minus exports) were -392 Bcf, or -13.1 Bcf/d, in September 2024, making the United States a net natural gas exporter. The United States exported 2.6 times more natural gas than it imported in September 2024. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in September 2024 were 4.6% higher than the daily rate of LNG exported in September 2023; the daily rate of LNG exports was the highest for the month since we began tracking LNG exports in 1997. In September 2024, the United States exported 12.1 Bcf/d of LNG to 30 countries. Natural gas imports and exports both increased year over year in September 2024:
  
  • Total imports: 247 Bcf for the month, or 8.2 Bcf/d
  • A 7.4% increase compared with September 2023 (7.7 Bcf/d)
  • Highest daily rate of natural gas imports for the month since 2012
  • Total exports: 638 Bcf for the month, or 21.3 Bcf/d
  • A 1.9% increase compared with September 2023 (20.9 Bcf/d)
  • Highest daily rate of natural gas exports for the month since we began tracking them in 1973
