Citizen Power, Inc.

Citizen Power is a public policy research, education and advocacy organization dedicated to promoting the increased use of renewable energy and energy-efficiency technologies.

Citizen Power conducts free energy education workshops in western Pennsylvania for grades 6th through 12th grade teachers responsible for energy related curriculum. Experts in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies provide hands-on instruction. Participants receive numerous teaching tools, including a functional model wind turbine, a solar energy kit, books, DVDs and a binder of resource material. The one-day workshop helps teachers to: Understand the environmental and health effects of energy use. Learn the scientific concepts of wind energy by constructing a wind turbine. Teachers can incorporate the following skills: math; science-electricity, magnetism, motion, observation, and data collection; social studies- discussion of natural resources; vocabulary; and discussion skills. Learn how a solar panel is constructed, how photovoltaic cells convert radiant energy into electricity and measure the output of a solar panel/array. In addition, teachers will learn the practical applications of solar energy. Learn the adverse consequences of wasting energy so that saving energy becomes a habit rather than a chore. Participants will conduct energy audits to measure their daily energy use, and learn how commonly used appliances use energy.
