1Municipal Solid Waste net generation is allocated according to the biogenic and non-biogenic components of the fuel; however, all Municipal Solid Waste summer capacity is classified as Renewable. Notes: Totals may not equal sum of components due to independent rounding. Other: Blast furnace gas, propane gas, other manufactured and waste gases derived from fossil fuels, non-biogenic municipal solid waste, batteries, chemicals, hydrogen, pitch, purchased steam, sulfur, tire-derived fuel, and miscellaneous technologies. Other Renewable: Wood, black liquor, other wood waste, biogenic municipal solid waste, landfill gas, sludge waste, agriculture byproducts, other biomass, geothermal, solar thermal, photovoltaic energy, and wind. Plants in State
Operator: Exelon Generation
Location and Service Territory: The oldest operating nuclear power plant in the Nation, Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant is located on an 800-acre site at Forked River, New Jersey.
Construction Cost: $488 million (2007 USD)2
Staffing: The plant employs approximately 450 people, not including security personnel.
Reactor Descriptions: The nuclear generating unit is a General Electric Type 2 boiling water reactor.
Cooling System: A semicircular canal was dredged between two streams to create the horseshoe-shaped cooling water system. The water is drawn from Barnegat Bay on the east side of the site.
Operator: PSEG Power
Location and Service Territory: Hope Creek nuclear power plant occupies an artificial island in Lower Alloways Creek Township, Salem County, New Jersey. Hope Creek plant shares the industrial site with the Salem plant.
Construction Cost: $8.510 billion (2007 USD)2
Staffing: The Salem and Hope Creek nuclear plants employ nearly 1,660 people.
Reactor Descriptions: Hope Creek has a single General Electric Type 4 boiling water reactor.
Cooling System: Hope Creek's cooling system uses a 512-foot high natural draft cooling tower that draws water from the Delaware River.
Operator: PSEG Power
Location and Service Territory: The Salem nuclear power plant is located near Salem, New Jersey, on a 700-acre site near in Lower Alloways Creek Township on the Delaware River. The plant shares a three-mile long island with the Hope Creek nuclear station.
Construction Cost: $4.283 billion (2007 USD) 2
Staffing: The Salem and Hope Creek nuclear plants employ nearly 1,660 people.
Reactor Descriptions: Salem has two, Westinghouse four-loop pressurized water reactors, each holding 193 fuel assemblies.
Cooling System: Salem uses a once-through cooling system that draws water from the Delaware River. The most visible feature on the site, the cooling tower, is used exclusively by the nearby Hope Creek plant.
