U.S. ENERGY INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION Note to Editors: EIA to Change Web Addresses of Key Information Releases On February 22, 2010, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) will change the web addresses for key information releases in the Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report (WNGSR) and the Weekly Petroleum Status Report (WPSR). For WPSR, which is released in two parts, the change affects only the morning part of the release which is the initial release of market sensitive information. WPSR files normally updated at 1 p.m., which present the same data in additional formats, will remain in the current location. This change is motivated by the need to assure EIA customers that the availability of the WPSR and WNGSR files is as fair, and expeditious, as possible. EIA is implementing these new web addresses with increased security measures to enhance protection against malicious activity associated with both data releases. The new web address (URL) for the WNGSR will be: http://ir.eia.gov/ngs/ngs.html The new URL for the following WPSR files will be:
MANUAL USERS: If you normally access the EIA website through the use of your browser software you will encounter no problems. The links on the EIA site will be updated to go to the appropriate location. We do, however, encourage you to update any bookmarks you may have for the affected files. For testing purposes we have prepared the new site with previous reports. You may check the URLs at this time. You may use the single link above for the WNGSR, and we have set up a test WPSR homepage (http://www.eia.gov/oil_gas/fwd/wpsrchgurl.html) that links each file to the appropriate location. Keep in mind that the new URLs will not become "official" until February 22, 2010. ROBOT USERS: Since users of automated retrieval applications (robots) will have to make configuration changes to account for the new URLs, we are providing an opportunity to test the applications. The test will be open to anyone, but it is essential for those with "robots" who normally access the site at 10:30 a.m. If you are one of these customers, please attempt to access the test version of the WNGSR or WPSR scheduled below. TESTING PROCEDURE We are providing the opportunity to test accessing the new website for all EIA customers under the same conditions that we normally use to release the data at 10:30 a.m. We will conduct two tests each for the WNGSR and WPSR. Please access the data by whatever method you normally use, starting 5 minutes before the scheduled test release time. Accessing the site during that time period will result in you receiving a web page displaying a "503 error - Page Temporarily Unavailable," and a message stating that the data will be automatically sent to your PC in "x" number of seconds. ONCE YOU RECEIVE THIS "503 ERROR" PAGE, YOU NEED DO NOTHING FURTHER. The test file will be automatically delivered to you when it is released at the scheduled test release times listed below. We are confident that browser and most robotic users will have no problems. For a few of the robotic customers, there may be a need to make some configuration changes to their robot. This test should enable you to make that determination. If you have any questions prior to or after the test, please contact us at: gatekeeper@eia.doe.gov. We will conduct two tests for each product with initial sample files containing data released in early December 2009. As each test occurs, the test file will be replaced with data for the next week. The test scenarios addressed in each test are as follows.
The instructions for all tests are as follows. 2. After you have accessed the test URL, you will receive a customized "503 Error - Page Temporarily Unavailable" like the one below:
3. Once you receive the 503 error page, DO NOTHING ELSE. The file you requested will be automatically delivered to you when it is released. Any automated retrieval program that excessively accesses information from EIA's website is prohibited. Excessive robot activity on EIA's website can cause delays and interfere with other customers' timely access to information. The EIA is committed to promptly release information according to established schedules. The EIA retains the right to limit or deny the use of any robotic activity that EIA considers an excessive or malicious practice (for example, robots that access or download information from EIA websites multiple times per second).
