International Petroleum Monthly (IPM)

Appendix D. Estimation Procedures

Estimation procedures are used for petroleum demand numbers in many of the countries outside of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in cases where data from EIA's International Energy Statistics are not yet available. Annual petroleum demand data for 2009 and earlier years, for all Non-OECD countries, may be found in the annual petroleum consumption table of EIA's International Energy Statistics. The status of the demand numbers shown in Table 1.7, Table 2.1, and Table 2.4 of this current International Petroleum Monthly may be summarized as follows:

(1) petroleum demand data for the United States and the U.S. Territories, and Chile, are from the Energy Information Administration.

(2) petroleum demand data for non-United States OECD countries are from the International Energy Agency.

(3) for countries outside of the OECD, the following approach is used. The annual numbers for 1997-2009 match the consumption numbers in the annual petroleum consumption table of EIA's International Energy Statistics. The quarterly numbers for 2009 forward are the best available EIA estimates, based upon the best quarterly and annual data currently available, analytic judgment about current trends, and some seasonal adjustments. These are based on the numbers that appear in Table 3a of EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook .
