The 1998 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS) provides data on heat and power consumption by reported end use for about 31% of total energy inputs in the wood products industry and about 50% of total energy inputs in the pulp and paper industry. Based on this data, the paper industry's largest use of energy for heat and power is for boiler fuel to provide process steam and onsite electricity generation. In the wood products industry, machine drives for equipment such as saws and conveyors appear to consume the largest share of reported energy use. End uses were not collected for black liquor and wood residues, accounting for the relatively large amounts of data labeled "Not Reported" in the charts below. [MECS 1998]
