Economic Profile and Trends
Value of Shipments | Annual Production | Labor Productivity

The chemical industry continues to be a strong contributor to the U.S. economy, with shipments increasing more than 5% every year over the last decade. The composition of the industry has changed, however, with increasing emphasis being placed on high-technology fields (pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, advanced materials). Pharmaceuticals is the highest valued sector (30% of shipments), followed by organic chemicals (17%) and resins/synthetics (14%). [DOC 2001]
