The aluminum industry is a major contributor to the U.S. economy, with shipments increasing steadily since the downturn of 1994-1995. In 1998, total U.S. primary aluminum production capacity was 9,251 million pounds; with production that year of 8,185 million pounds, the capacity utilization was 88.5% [AA 2000].

**In the SIC system, a number of production activities related to aluminum manufacturing were grouped with that of other non-ferrous metals. However, beginning in 1997 under NAICS, such activities have been separated into aluminum-specific classifications, which allow more precise tabulation.
