How many employees are there? There are approximately 4.5 million workers employed in health care buildings across the United States; this is 6 percent of the commercial workforce. There are 3.0 million workers in inpatient health care and 1.4 million in outpatient health care.
Health care buildings contain an average of 43 workers per building, more than double the average for all commercial buildings, which is 17 workers. Inpatient health care buildings average 138 workers per building; outpatient health care buildings average 17 workers per building. There is an average of 520 square feet per worker in health care buildings (541 square feet for inpatient and 478 square feet for outpatient), less than the average for all commercial buildings, which is 766 square feet per worker.
