Analysis of Natural Gas Consumption
2010
Natural Gas Year-In-Review 2009
This is a special report that provides an overview of the natural gas industry and markets in 2009 with special focus on the first complete set of supply and disposition data for 2009 from the Energy Information Administration. Topics discussed include natural gas end-use consumption trends, offshore and onshore production, imports and exports of pipeline and liquefied natural gas, and above-average storage inventories. Categories: Prices, Production, Consumption, Imports/Exports & Pipelines, Storage (Released, 7/9/2010, Html format)
Trends in U.S. Residential Natural Gas Consumption
This report presents an analysis of residential natural gas consumption trends in the United States through 2009 and analyzes consumption trends for the United States as a whole (1990 through 2009) and for each Census Division (1998 through 2009). It examines a long-term downward per-customer consumption trend and analyzes whether this trend persists across Census Divisions. The report also examines some of the factors that have contributed to the decline in per-customer consumption. To provide a more meaningful measure of per-customer consumption, EIA adjusted consumption data presented in the report for weather. Categories: Consumption (Released, 6/23/2010, pdf format)
Seasonality in the Natural Gas Balancing Item: Historical Trends and Corrective Measure
This special report examines an underlying cause of the seasonal pattern in the balancing item published in the Natural Gas Monthly. Research finds that a significant portion of data collected on EIA's primary monthly natural gas consumption survey reflects billing data that does not strictly coincide with the actual calendar month, which creates an aggregate-level discrepancy with EIA's other natural gas supply and disposition data series. This discrepancy is especially observable during the fall and spring as one transitions into and out of the winter heating season. The report also outlines improved data collection and estimation procedures that will be implemented later this year to more closely align reported and actual calendar month consumption. Revisions in Natural Gas Monthly Consumption and Price Data, 2004 - 2007
This report summarizes the method in which natural gas consumption data are collected and processed for publication and details the most notable revisions in natural gas consumption data for the period 2004 to 2007. It is intended to assist data users in evaluating the quality of the monthly consumption and price data for residential, commercial, and industrial consumers of natural gas. Categories: Prices, Consumption (Released, 12/31/2009, pdf format)
Natural Gas Year-In-Review 2008
This is a special report that provides an overview of the natural gas industry and markets in 2008 with special focus on the first complete set of supply and disposition data for 2008 from the Energy Information Administration. Topics discussed include natural gas end-use consumption trends, offshore production shut-ins caused by infrastructure problems and hurricanes, imports and exports of pipeline and liquefied natural gas, and the above-average storage inventories in 2008. Categories: Prices, Production, Consumption, Imports/Exports & Pipelines, Storage (Released, 4/23/2009, Html format)

Estimates of Peak Underground Working Gas Storage Capacity in the United States
This special report provides national and regional updates to estimates for U.S. aggregate natural gas storage capacity as of mid-2008. The estimates for national and regional peak capacity are based on the repored maximum reported working gas volumes for individual active facilities from January 2003 through May 2008. Categories: Storage, Consumption (Released, 10/7/2008, pdf format)
Additions to Capacity on the U.S. Natural Gas Pipeline Network: 2007
This report examines new natural gas pipeline capacity added to the U.S. natural gas pipeline system during 2007 and the areas of the country where those additions were concentrated. In addition, it discusses and analyzes proposed natural gas pipeline projects that may be developed between 2008 and 2010 and the market factors supporting these initiatives. Categories: Import/Export & Pipelines, Consumption (Released, 7/17/2008, pdf format)
Global Gas Outlook
World natural gas consumption and production are expected to increase by more than 50 percent from 2005 through 2030. Asia is expected to become the world’s number one gas consumer, taking over that spot from North America, as China’s economy grows 6.4 percent annually. Non-OECD countries are expected to account for more than 70 percent of the world’s total growth in consumption and production of natural gas over the forecast period. A significant portion of the non-OECD production growth is expected to be in the form of export projects, particularly LNG projects. World LNG trade is projected to more than double by 2030, with the center of the trade moving away from northeast Asia toward an even Atlantic/Pacific basin split. Distribution of Natural Gas: The Final Step in the Transmission Process
This special report analyzes the role of local distribution companies (LDCs) and transmission pipelines in delivering natural gas supplies to end-use customers, focusing upon the years 1996 through 2006. It also examines the changing dynamics of natural gas end-use markets, especially the trend toward large-volume users such as electric power generation plants and large industrial users receiving greater portions of their supplies from mainline natural gas transmission pipeline companies rather than the traditional LDC. Impact of Higher Natural Gas Prices on Local Distribution Companies and Residential Customers
This report examines some of the problems faced by natural gas consumers as a result of increasing heating bills in recent years and problems associated with larger amounts of uncollectible revenue and lower throughput for the local distribution companies (LDCs) supplying the natural gas. The report also discusses Federal, State, and utility assistance programs for consumers, and focuses on various innovative rate mechanisms used by LDCs, along with the use of physical and financial hedging as a risk-mitigating strategy. Lastly, the report analyzes the risk of LDCs and how the risk has changed since regulatory reform in the utility industry. Categories: Prices, Consumption (Released, 8/15/2007, pdf format)
