Previous Reports (pdf)

The Annual Coal Report (ACR) provides annual data on U.S. coal production, number of mines, productive capacity, recoverable reserves, employment, productivity, consumption, stocks, and prices. All data for 2014 and prior years are final.

Highlights for 2014:

  • In 2014, U.S. coal production marked an increase of 1.5% year over year to surpass 1.0 billion short tons, reversing a trend shown in 2013, when domestic coal production fell below one billion short tons for the first time since 1993.
  • Coal production in the total Western region increased in 2014 by 12.6 million short tons to 542.8 million short tons, after declining by 13.0 million shorts tons in 2013.
  • In 2014, the productive capacity of U.S. coal mines decreased for the third year in a row, reaching 1,243.7 million short tons, a decline of 0.7% from the prior year.
  • The total number of employees at U.S. coal mines in 2014 continued to decline, reaching 74,931 employees, a decrease of 6.8% from 2013.
  • U.S. coal consumption declined slightly (0.7%) to 917.7 million short tons from the 2013 level. The electric power sector consumed about 92.8% of the total U.S. coal consumption in 2014.
  • Average sales price of coal from U.S. mines decreased from $37.24 per short ton in 2013 to $34.83 per short ton in 2014 (6.5% lower than 2013).
  • Total U.S. coal stocks decreased 1.2% to 198.0 million short tons, a decrease of 2.4 million short tons. Electric power sector coal stocks increased from 148.0 million short tons at the end of 2013 to 151.8 million short tons at the end of 2014.
